The Next Step:

Deep Immersion/Teacher Training Programs January 2011

So you’ve been practicing yoga for a while now. You go to classes regularly and you really enjoy it. But there’s something missing. Something fundamental in your practice that you need to investigate and expose yourself more to the depths of yoga, and you need someone and something to take you there. You’ve gotten to a point where you can go no further with the teacher(s) and the places you’ve been. You want to expand into a better you but you feel that you haven’t found the place and/or person who could take you there…

So you have the notion that you want to teach yoga. There are all sorts of programs out there, sure. But which one is for you? How can you sift through all this information and get to a point where you can feel good about your decision. Well, that depends on what you’re looking for… if you are looking to learn asana names and maybe a few techniques in practice and what to say when you are teaching, then a number of places can teach you that. If you want to delve into the depths of the practice: physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, and if you are the kind of person who thinks: …surely I must have the experience of the breadth of yoga before I can teach others. I must go to the depths of the practice that I will want to teach to others. I want to be the kind of teacher who inspires because I’ve been there.” Then you must come to Shama-Bhakti Yoga Centre.

This program is like no other. Yoga is about self-realization and this course is designed to
take you to that deeper part of you! For sure, you will learn the names of the asana, the
history of yoga's beginnings, philosophical terms and concepts, anatomy of the body and
of the asana, etc. But where will you learn how to LIVE IT!!!! Here at Shama-Bhakti Yoga Centre,
that's where! If you have gone as far as you can with the teachers and places you have been
going to and you are seeking more depth and understanding then look no further. Come in
and see what we can offer you.

The program consists of one weekend per month for the bulk of the program as a group. The
rest of the program involves self-study: some reading and assignments, attending classes and
seeing the director for private sessions twice per month. You can choose to what degree you
would like to be involved. Please come in to speak with Christine about how you can get involved.

This program can lead to a teacher certificate recognized by the CYA by attending 200+ hours which is the requirement for a certificate. This program is also open to individuals who would like to deepen their knowledge and experience of yoga in their lives (Deep Immersion part of the program). Below is the outline of how to approach this program when making a decision about what to do. Please consult below and if you have any questions you may email me for further clarification.

Teacher Training

Teacher trainees must attend all weekend hours and include the 2 hours/month of private sessions, 3 hours of asana practice per week, out of studio assignments, and 20 hours of anatomy = 200+ hours of training.

Philosophy

A part of becoming a Teacher is to immerse yourself into your own practice and self- transformation.

Shama-Bhakti’s approach to teaching is to understand yoga as a deep opening on all levels and, to be an effective and profound teacher, you must be prepared to go to those levels of opening yourself, on the planes of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self.

Yoga postures are just a part of the full practice of yoga. This training/immersion gives you the tools to affect your own growth and provides the space in which to experiment and practice.

Your growth is influenced by how much you involve yourself in the program; the longer the process, the deeper the impact the teachings will have on you. Therefore the training is laid out along 10 months of deep immersion and reflection; meeting once a month for formal classes and during the month self practice and study. (Self-asana practice will be initially based on the Ashtanga Vinyasa System.)
